What you have a right to know about your holistic practitioner.
It is important that you have a clear understanding about a practitioner’s skills, training and experience and how he or she will use hypnosis to help you address challenging life issues. Many hypnotherapists (also called hypnotists or consulting hypnotists) are certified practitioners without any medical training. Some certifications are granted after only a weekend workshop, some after a weeklong intensive plus homework assignments, and other certification could be the result of years of self or on-site study. At the other end of the spectrum, there are psychotherapists, psychiatrists, medical doctors and others who have studied hypnosis for use as just one of many tools offered to their patients. You are the one who can best decide which professional is best suited to help you. Hypnotherapists may have more experience with hypnosis and regression therapy because that is their specialty; medical practitioners may have clinical knowledge that will have more value to you. The decision is yours.
Regardless of whom you choose, I think that each and every holistic professional should be proactive about sharing basic information with you regarding their training, credentials, skills and experience. And you may be interested in whether their training stopped in 1970 or whether they continue to attend workshops, conferences, etc. As an example, following is what I share with clients:
Contact Information: My name is Donna Nowak. My office is located at __________________. I can be reached by telephone at _____________, by fax at ______________, or by email sent to _______________.
Education and Training: I was trained and certified in hypnosis by the Eastern Institute of Transpersonal Hypnotherapy and trained in regression therapy by Henry Leo Bolduc and certified by the International Board for Regression Therapy (IBRT). I am the founder of an educational nonprofit that encourages health and wholeness through an understanding of the mind, body, spirit connection. I am a member of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA), American Association of Professional Hypnotists (AAPH), Association for Research & Enlightenment (ARE), International Association for Regression Research & Therapies (IARRT), the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists (NATH), and the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH). I participate in annual continuing education to maintain my training at a high level.
AS THE STATE OF OHIO HAS NOT ADOPTED EDUCATIONAL OR TRAINING STANDARDS FOR THE PRACTICE OF HYPNOTISM, THIS STATEMENT OF CREDENTIALS IS FOR INFORMATION-AL PURPOSES ONLY. Hypnotism is a self-regulating profession, and practitioners are not licensed by the state government. I am not a physician; therefore, I may not make a diagnosis or recommend discontinuance of medically prescribed treatments. If a client desires a diagnosis or any other type of treatment from a different practitioner, the client may seek such services at any time. In the event my services are terminated by a client, the client has a right to coordinated transfer of services to another practitioner. A client has a right to refuse hypnosis services at any time. A client has a right to be free of physical, verbal or sexual abuse. A client has a right to know the expected duration of treatment and may assert any right without retaliation.
The services I render are held out to the public as a form of motivational coaching, combined with instruction in self-hypnosis. I do not represent my services as any form of healthcare or psychotherapy, and in spite of research to the contrary, by law I may make no health benefit claims to clients for my services.
Redress: I am a member of
the National Guild of Hypnotists and practice in accordance with its Code of
Ethics and Standards. If you ever have a complaint about my services or behavior
that I cannot resolve for you personally, you may contact the NGH at P.O. Box 308, Merrimack, NH 03054-0308
(603-429-9438) to seek redress. Other services than my own may be available to you in the community.
You may locate such providers in the telephone book or via the Internet.
Fees: The charges for my services are $____ for consultation/hypnosis sessions and $___ for past-life regression sessions. I accept payment by cash or check.
Confidentiality: I will not release any information to anyone without authorization from you,
except as provided for by law. You have a right to be allowed access to my written record about you.
Insurance: I suggest you think of my services as something that you will pay for personally.
That will both protect your privacy and help you value the work you are doing more. In general, insurance
companies do not like to cover hypnotic services, and I caution you not to expect them to do so.
My Approach: A high level of trust and understanding between the two of us will increase
the likelihood of success. I will respect your confidentiality and do my best to help you identify problem
areas and determine an appropriate scope of induction and treatment. Transpersonal hypnotherapy incorporates
the belief that there is a dimension to human nature greater than our three-dimensional consciousness, so
guidance of our Higher Power and your innate spiritual resources will prevail within the therapeutic relationship.
